Cafe Bonjour

One of my favorite cafes while I studied at HKU, probably because it was conveniently across the street.

Bonjour is a cute little café that tries to live up to its name, though most people just walk by and grab something to go, most people do not even know there are plenty of places to sit in the back – which is great if you are looking for a place to hideout or chill. Though it might be a little noisy at times since the right outside is busy Bonham Rd.

This bakery/café is definitely a little more homey and HK style than most cafes I visit in HK. The baked goods they have are a variety of Western-style and local-style breads and buns. They have the usual “Pineapple buns” and “cocktail buns” and some more unique stuff like their “Milk Balls” – crunchy sweet buns, soft on the inside that you can get plain or with fillings like peanut butter or blueberry cream cheese. They also have spaghetti and sandwiches to order.

Don’t go there for the drinks, nothing special coffees and some teas, I ordered a very watery milk tea once.

Also don’t expect service to be first class, the waitresses there sit around when it gets a little slow and complain about how bored they are…while I am just sitting there.

The décor seems to change every week! The bookshelf disappears, reappears, moved to against another wall each time I visit. The Roman numeral clock on the wall is just for show, it doesn’t even work. The paintings on the wall and the occasional potted bonsai plant on the shelf says the owner can’t decide what they really want to do with the place. Though the light rose colored walls and the little window – makes you feel like you are in the corner of a French cottage. There is WiFi here surprisingly, but it is very unstable.

I recommend the Ciabatta sandwiches, very satisfying. Even if you do not have time to sit around in the back, grab a bun to go- very inexpensive. Who can resist the little gingerbread man logo?
